Quilt Group August 2011

We met at Jeralyn's home for our August 2011 Quilt Group Meeting. We had lots of catching up on vacations! In attendance were Jeralyn, Linda, Jane, Patti, Ann Marie and Laura - which is almost all of us these days! As you can see from the photos below we had a lot of things to share, which is inspiring! We are planning a work day for our next meeting - details to come later!

Complete!

I was able to get this quilt completed and my niece received it Mothers' Day weekend - a nice surprise for her! She loved it. I even made a little doll quilt to go along with it for her little girl, Avalon - the ladybug quilt was actually for her. I ended up, at the last minute, binding it in the red and am pleased with the result. It looks better on the back, too.

Ladybug Quilt

I started this quilt a few years ago and finally got it done and to the quilter's. It is for my niece. I had made a similar quilt for my daughter, Kim, for her baby, and when my niece saw it she wanted one, also, for her little girl (who was a baby at the time!). I know she will still love and appreciate it, even though that baby is nearly 3 years old. This is actually the first quilt that I have had someone else quilt. I am going to bind it in black.

Quilt Group at Ann Marie's

The entire group met on April 21st at Ann Marie's home. Many of us had not seen their new addition, so we got the tour. It is beautiful, just beautiful. I personally could take your new kitchen and put it right in my home and be happy. A lot of us had things to share that evening. Here is Jane's Christmas tree skirt...

2011 Meeting Schedule

I've been meaning to post this for a long time--so here it is (finally)! Mark your calendars for:

- finishing (and sharing) projects already underway
- doing heart pillows as a charity project, possibly in May or June

New News

We held a successful work meeting on March 5, 2011. Lots was accomplished - including eating lots of good food and lots of visiting! We met again March 17 at Laura's. Jeralyn demonstrated a darling Sweet Treat Bag made with 1 1/2" strips. Cute, cute, cute! She was kind enough to make up kits for those that wanted one - Thanks, Jeralyn! She also shared two quilts that she completed. One was a darling Easter quilt - see photo below - the other is a wedding gift for Bracken Rawlings, whom most of us know (did not get a photo of that one!).

I saw this on Lisa Coulombe's Facebook page, and loved the starry sashing. I might consider something like this (in jewel tones) for setting our shared star blocks.

Perspective

March meeting

As always fun to come together for inspiration.

Star blocks inspiration?

Ladies: I saw this image of a quilt on The Quilt Show's email this morning, and it made me think of our star blocks project. Maybe this will provide inspiration/ideas for how to set our blocks:

February Quilt Meeting

Remember ladies that we will be meeting at Debbie Fort's on Thursday, February 25th to work on pillowcases for charity. You will need 7/8 yard fabric for the main body, 1/3 yard for the border, and 1/8 yard for the accent strip. If your fabric for the main body is directional, you may need 1 1/4 yards. Look through your stash and see what you can put together. A few of us will need to bring sewing machines. I'll bring mine, Debbie will have hers, and the first two to email me can bring theirs. It will be a lot of fun. We'll start at 7:00.

Background Fabric for our Star Blocks

So I went to Bits and Pieces Saturday and got the neutral background fabric for our star block project. (Bottom picture on the right.)

It seems to have a gold undertone and I think it has a nice texture. The middle picture gives a comparison of it to the three neutral fabrics that we picked from Thursday's meeting. Pretty close, I think.

The number of choices was actually somewhat limited since we needed 12 1/2 yards. So the woman who helped me and I could only look for very "fat bolts" because bolts in general only have 14-15 yards on them (interesting fact to know).

FYI, at the top is a picture with the "color wheel" of jewel tones.

If I bought the full (rest of the) bolt, Bits and Pieces gave a 25% discount. The bolt had 13 1/2 yards, so I went ahead and got the whole thing to get the discount. So I do have extra fabric for anyone who wants more than a yard and a half. (Laura already has dibs on 2 yards.) I have not done the math yet to determine individual cost, but will do so soon. Just wanted to get these pictures up quickly. Call me if you want me to cut you a piece and get started!

November Meeting

At our last meeting we shared some sample jewel tone fabrics that we thought would work well with for next group project. Below is a sample of a gold background fabric and some Jewel tones that we could use for our "Valley of the Sun Stars" Or should I say our Jeweled Star Quilt. Some of us chose our star pattern from the Quilted Cache Website http://quilterscache.com/QuiltBlocksGalore58.html. So take a look and choose your star. See you at our next group meeting!

Our next project?

At our November "mini-meeting," I said that I would post a picture of a sample block that I put together from the choices on the Quilters Cache site that were suggested last time. And here it is! (The hardest part was figuring out how to post it here.) We thought that in January we might make a plan (including block and colo choices) for possible completion in May or June. Something to be thinking about. -- Linda

Valley of the Sun Stars

It was great getting together with everyone. We had a really fun night. We decided to do the Valley of the Sun Stars from the Quilter's Cache website http://quilterscache.com/QuiltBlocksGalore58.html for this year's group project. We talked about using jewel tones on a tan background. Each person would choose a color on the color wheel and use its complementary color as a contrast fabric. At our next meeting we need to bring some fabric color swatchs from our stash to show and then we will discuss how we want to proceed with the project.

Pam's quilt top for Ashley is finished and ready for the quilters.


Patti's found treasure. Patti found this quilt while cleaning out her mothers house. Made with 30's and 40's prints and hand quilted. A good lesson on why we should label our quilts. Her mother can't remember where it came from.


Of course we topped off the evening with a yummy treat. I tried a new recipe from the Cooks Illustrated Lost Recipes Cookbook "Peach Puzzle". The ramekin is placed upside down in the center of a nine inch pie plate. I arranged whole peeled peaches around the ramekin poured syrup over the peaches and then topped the whole thing with a pasty dough and pressed it around the peaches Not the plate. After baking you place a serving plate over the pie plate and flip the dish over. The sauce has collected in the ramekin ready to serve with the peaches.

October Meeting

I'm looking forward to our meeting this week. If you have an idea for another project please bring it to share. I have a couple of ideas, here is a link to one. It is called the "Valley of the Suns" from Marcia Hohn's site Quilters Cache #58 http://quilterscache.com/QuiltBlocksGalore58.html. Take a look and see if this is something you might want to do for our next project. We can all choose a star and swap etc.

I also like working on quilts using charm packs. I picked up these 2 patterns in my travels.



Whither you are interested in starting a new project, finishing up an undone project (I have a drawer full) or just want to come and visit it will be fun to see you.

Thank-you Jeralyn for posting the pictures of our Patriotic swap. It was fun to see completed projects. Perhaps now I will get mine done to add to the group.


This week I finished my 4th table Runner for Katrina. I had decided to make one for each of my girls. As you can see I've been enjoying my free time in my sewing room.
